Maria forced her eyes to stay open. Her backside felt numb in the saddle; the ride across the barren desert had been long and grueling. All night she had followed Charging Falcon. They had changed horses twice, but hadn't stopped to eat or rest, fearing being followed. Maria was nearing a state of total fatigue from being hungry and tired, yet she fought to ride onward.
She flinched when Charging Falcon wheeled his horse around and reached out to take her horse's reins, stopping her. She licked her lips, parched from thirst. She combed her fingers through her wind-tossed hair, looking at Charging Falcon, knowing that they had more than likely come to the place where they were to part.
Maria squinted up at the sun, which had reached the midway point in the sky; then she looked toward the mountains. Somewhere in them was Shadow's stronghold. Could she ride that far alone? Or should she try to find her way to her father's house?
She seemed not to truly have a choice at all, for she did not think that she could arrive at either place alive. She was weak from lack of food and water. She was beginning to feel a strange lethargic spinning in the head, caused by hunger, thirst, and fatigue!
Perhaps this was what Charging Falcon had planned for her all along! He had only pretended to care that she should not be left under the care of the evil Spaniard! He had brought her to this place of all sun and sand and was going to leave her to die; surely this was just another way to get back at Shadow!
"This is as far as I can go with you," Charging Falcon said, his eyelids heavy over his dark eyes. "I cannot take you on to Shadow's stronghold. He would not understand why I chose to steal you away, then rescue you. He would not understand why I shot Pleasant Voice and left her to die, then rescued you. I do not have answers myself, Maria. Perhaps it is because I am beginning to lessen in resentment toward Shadow. After I shot Pleasant Voice and left her, I began to have feelings of guilt for the first time in many moons. These feelings have been following me around like a ghost. I tried to fight this emotion by abducting you to prove to myself that I am not lessening in hard feelings toward Shadow. But after I left you with the Spaniard I could not live with more guilt. Too much plagues my heart already."
With a sweep of the hand, he motioned toward the mountains. "It looks like a far way to go, but it is not," he said, trying to reassure her. "Just set your sights on the mountains and ride toward them. By tonight you will be there. You will be seen by Shadow's warriors. They will take you to Shadow. Tell him how my heart is suffering, Maria. Tell him I am ready to repent all that I have done to his people.
